The Los Angeles Lakers are a professional basketball team located in Los Angeles, California. This American team, which is highly victorious and famous, is a member of National Basketball Association (NBA). It was established in 1946, in Detroit, Michigan, when Ben Berger and Morris Chalfen acquired the Detroit Gems from National Basketball League (NBL) for $15,000. The team was later shifted to Minneapolis and was named after the state’s other popular name, the “Land of 10,000 Lakes”.
During the time when John Kundla was the coach of the team, the Lakers achieved their first five NBA championships from 1949 to 1954. In 1960, the team relocated to Los Angeles, comprising of most popular basketball players Elgin Baylor, Jerry West, Gail Goodrich, and Wilt Chamberlain. In spite of the unexceptional talent the team possessed, it still lost 6 games against the Boston Celtics. Later on, in 1972, the team enjoyed their first victory in Los Angeles under the leadership of Bill Sharman.
In the 1980’s, The Los Angeles Lakers became more popular and successful after they marvelously won five championships in the span of nine years with commendable efforts of Hall of Famers Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, James Worthy and Coach Pat Riley.
In both the years of 2004 and 2008, the Lakers faced great defeat in the NBA finals, but it lived for a short while, in 2009, the Lakers managed to win the championship for the 15th time. They defeated the Orlando Magic by four to one. On their success, John Hollinger, basketball analyst and journalist, named the Lakers the best NBA team of all-time.
